The U13 team met at Prestbury squash club on 2nd/3rd May to compete in the Northern Cup. In recent years this has always proved a tough challenge for the team. The boys were expecting a similarly tough time this year, but there was hope of building on last years improvements. Over the weekend Cumbria faced teams from Lancashire, Northumbria, and Cheshire 1 and 2. The Cumbria team of Michael Hobbs, Joe Money, Jake Twentyman, Bradley Frain, Sam Harrison and Ashley Thompson, all played well and individually won at least one of their matches. This gave much encouragement to the team as many of them had not previously won games at this level of competition. There were also a number of tough 5 set matches with both Michael and Sam winning against the opposition from Cheshire 1 and Lancashire respectively. In total over the weekend the boys managed to win 10 of their first team matches, plus 3 of their team reserve challenge matches. There were very good performances from both Michael and Ashley each managing to win 3 of their games. The team rounded off the weekend with a 5-0 victory over Cheshire 2 to send them home in fine spirits. Well done boys and keep up the improvement for next time.

COUNTYJUNIOR U15 BOYS HAVE MIXED RESULTS

A gallant foray into the North East at the end of last year that ran short of a positive result was turned around in January when the youngsters came out winners in the Cheshire region. The October team travelled to Yarm in Cleveland and comprised Freddie Simpson-Cassidy, Ryan Doran, Jonathan Christian, Bradley Mills and Adam Cooper. The boys represented Cumbria against Durham & Cleveland, Northumbria and Yorkshire and although they each gave creditable performances - with a number of four and five game matches - they couldn't achieve a winning result. In January the Cumbria team turned the tables on Cheshire and Lincolnshire. The early morning start and the long journey to Bowdon in Cheshire for Freddie Simpson-Cassidy, Ryan Doran, Adam Pearson, Bradley Mills and Adam Cooper proved worthwhile as their endeavours on court resulted in wins over the other two counties.

November 2008 The Cumbrian U13 boys team of Michael Hobbs, Joe Money, Jake Twentyman, Ashley Thompson and Sam Harrison travelled to Pontefract at the weekend to take on teams from Yorkshire, Merseyside and Cheshire. This was a terrific experience for the boys, some of whom were new to the Inter County competition. The high standard of squash played at the event meant that it was always going to be a tough challenge, and so it proved to be. The team did eventually lose their three matches, but all boys performed admirably each pushing their opponents close at times. Three of the boys Michael, Joe, and ashley took games in their matches. Ashley was particularly unlucky having to retire hurt after being in a winning position. Despite the defeats the results were an improvement on last years performance, and one the team could take much encouragement from.
