Junior County Championships 2016: Report

Report from tournament organiser David Henderson:

U11B

There were 4 entries in the U11 boys section, 3 players from Carlisle and one from Wigton.  Nathan Sellers proved to be the outstanding entrant in a round robin event, although up and coming Xander Vasey pushed him hard as he deservedly earned the runners/up slot.

U13B

Last year's U11 champion, Sedbergh's James Corrigan, probably anticipated an easy passage to the U13 champion's berth.  However, the up and coming and rapidly improving Joshua Tang from Workington pushed him all the way in a single match competition.  Twice Joshua came from behind to level the match before James' experience saw him through the final game decider.

U11G/U13G

As there was only a single entry in both the U11G and U13G section, it was decided to ask the involved girls to play off to legitimise their county champion status.  Unsurprisingly the older and more experienced player, Amy Robertshaw from Carlisle, triumphed over new to competition, Windscale's India Singleton

U15B

The largest entry number came in the U15B section, allowing two round robin sections of 3 players to determine the play-off pecking order. Although pushed hard by club-mate Joseph Broadley in the 1st/2nd place play-off, newly acclaimed Welsh Open champion Adam Goad showed his class as he won 3-0 in the final game

U15G

New to competition Sophie Francis from Whitehaven gave a good account of herself against competition hardened opponents in Michelle Tang (Workington) and Rebekah Hall (Carlisle).  Michelle proved too strong for the other girls as she secured another county championship for a member of the Tang family

U17B

Wigton's James Wilkinson proved to be too strong for his 3 opponents in a round robin competition.  All credit to another new to competition Louie Sproat (Carlisle) who can't have found it easy.  Runner up in this section was Wigton's Adam Gill.

U17G

In a match that was played on Saturday, Carlisle's Eve Driver confirmed her supremacy of previous year's as she beat club-mate Lucy Hunter in a one-off decider

U19B

Old adversaries Keane Appleton (Carlisle) and Brandon Groggins (Windscale) met in the tournament's final match. Unfortunately Brandon could not match his performance of 2015 as Keane cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win
