Players from Carlisle, Wigton, Workington, Whitehaven, Windscale and Dalton battled it out in some fiercely competitive games over the weekend.
Carlisle were the weekend’s biggest winners as they took picked up three county titles, with clubs from west Cumbria taking the rest of the spoils.
Workington sisters Michelle and Rachel Tang won the under 13 and under 17 girls titles respectively with Whitehaven brothers Dan and Matthew Harrison picking up the under 11 and under 19 titles.
Carlisle’s rising star Adam Goad, ranked fourth nationally, picked up the under 13 boys championhsip for the second time after beating clubmate and rival Joseph Broadley in the final. Eve Driver was next to add a title to Carlisle’s growing list by retaining her under 15 girls championship. Keane Appleton, who is also rising up the junior national rankings, scooped his first county championship in the under 15 boys category with an impressive showing over the weekend. His county teammate James Wilkinson from Wigton Squash Club unfortunately had to withdraw from the final due to a shoulder injury but was awarded the Matthew Allison memorial trophy, a prize given out every year to the player who competes with particular spirit.
In one of the games of the tournament, Windscale Squash Club rivals Brandon Groggins and Jackson Holliday battled it out for the u17 boys crown. It was Brandon who pipped his clubmate 3-1, with the fourth set going to an nailbiting tie-break, finsihing 16-14. It was Brandon’s second county championship after winning the under 15 category last season.
