On Saturday 26 April a team of Cumbrian boys took part in the U11 Festival organised by ESR at the national squash centre in Manchester.
With volunteer manager Alison Johnston in charge the team consisted of Christopher Butler, George Johnston and Zak Leathers, all from the Wigton club.
Competition proved stiff, with the biggest counties in England all represented, Yorkshire and Essex both in the same group as Cumbria.
After a long day, which included six matches for each player, Cumbria finished a creditable 11th overall. The bonus from our entry in this event is that two of this year’s team will be age eligible for next year’s competition – should England Squash decide that it is to become and annual event.
Sadly, we could not raise enough players to enter a girls team, emphasising the need for our upcoming Grassroots Development Project (GDP) to stimulate the recruitment of young players. Look out for more information about this project in the next few weeks.
