Matthew began playing squash at age six and was soon playing regularly. His ability rapidly improved and he began competing in tournaments throughout the country.

Reaching the coveted number one ranking position is due to a culmination of high placed finishes in England Squash tournaments over the past two years. Travelling throughout the country at weekends and school holidays with his parents, Matt had the opportunity to pick up ranking points in each tournament he competed in. Due to his consistent performances, Matt has now earned the most ranking points and as a result, sits aloft the national squash ranking list.

This season has seen Matt achieve a number of firsts. In January, he was part of the county under 13 boys team that made history when they became the first team from Cumbria to be crowned national champions. Matthew won the deciding match in a season-long tournament held at Pontefract in Yorkshire in which all of the counties in England and Wales compete. Matt is also the north west regional champion.
