Racketball sessions at Workington Leisure Centre

Workington Leisure Centre will play host to an all new initiative to introduce potential players to the growing sport of Racketball. Racketball is one of the UK’s fastest growing sports. The sport is played on regular squash courts and is very similar to squash but is much easier to start-up than squash, and is a sport that appeals to a wider range of people.

In Racketball a larger ball is used, which is more bouncy and does not need warming up like in squash which means that rallies can be longer as the ball moves slower, this allows opponents more time to react. A shorter racket is also used which helps the player with hand eye coordination and makes the ball easier to strike.

The fully coached Introduction sessions start on Tuesday 28th January running over lunch time at 12.30 for the next five weeks. The sessions are welcoming all levels of fitness and ability and equipment is provided free of charge.

The Introduction sessions are part of an initiative by Cumbria Squash and Racketball, supported by Carlisle Leisure, who run the leisure centre, Active Cumbria and Allerdale Borough Council, with additional support from England Squash. Guy Huxtable, from Cumbria Squash and Racketball, said: “We want to encourage people to come along and try out the sport – especially at this time of year when people are trying to get fit after the Christmas break. People can burn off more than 500 calories in a game! And it’s not affected by the weather either. Hopefully we will attract people in their lunch breaks from work.”
